red airplane dragon

red airplane dragon

This dragon was drawn on a blue and brown airplane, in red pen. (And in my drawing of the day sketchbook, which is of course a violation of the standard rules.)  I’m posting him here because I really think this is the first drawing I have ever made while actually in flight.  I’ve drawn a lot of stuff in airports, but in the air quarters are tight and I tend to get terribly airsick if I concentrate on anything for very long.  In fact, I might have worked this image up a little more if the “fasten seatbelt” light hadn’t gone on at this point in the process.  As it stands, it’s a bit of a historical artifact– I don’t think I’m going to be drawing on an airplane again any time soon.

This is also the first drawing I’ve made with a strange little pen I bought this summer at Staples–a Zebra Sarasa 0.7 in “merlot”.   I’ve been writing with it for a few weeks, mostly because it is a weird and interesting color that looks good on yellow legal pad.  I’ve never had a maroon gel pen before.  All cheap gel pens are kind of lumpy and dump chunks of ink for you to drag your fingers through.  You’d never want to attempt finished work with one,  but in the sketchbook its eccentricities can become a “special effect”.
