best of the drawing of the day, week 25: boris the spider

Since minicomics live! has become a middle distance race instead of a sprint, the regular weekly posts will go on as usual.  For new visitors, that means that it’s still Thursday, and that means it’s time for the best of the drawing of the day.

For the last almost four years, I have been making a finished drawing of some kind every single day.  Obviously, not every drawing someone makes as part of this kind of creativity exercise is going to be excellent.  I know that lots of mine stink on ice and are not something I would want to share.  But almost every week there’s one that’s pretty good, or at least interesting enough in some other way to make the regular Thursday feature.  This week, we have everyone’s favorite Uncle Boris.

I’ve always liked that song, “Boris the Spider” by the Who. “Who’s that climbing up the wall, black and hairy, very small?” I know, it’s a silly song, but I like it.  I’ve also always liked experimenting with designs for spider people.  In most of them I’m trying to figure out the eight spider legs, but in this one the eight spider eyes take center stage.  Presumably Boris sees with the first two sets, the ones wearing the glasses, and the other four, arrayed across his forehead, are used for other kinds of sensing.  While he does have eight limbs and the black bristly spider hair, the rest of him is not particularly spiderlike.  His generic “animal ears” are a common chimera trait, and I have no idea where the horse tail came from, except that it looked good with the rest of him.   Notice how cleverly I avoid figuring out what exactly his feet look like.  This is called artistic license.

While most people wouldn’t necessarily call Boris a spider chimera, he identifies as one and has chosen his use name accordingly.  Apparently I’m not the only one who likes that song.
