confederate violets

Spring came very late this year, and is perhaps extra welcome because of that.  In our neighborhood park, the wild violets are everywhere, quite suddenly.violetsitstayHere, as in Kekionga, some people call the little pale ones “Confederate violets” because from a distance they look grey.  But up close they are white, with markings of the classic violet purple.violetcrop-1If you get even closer, you will see that they are striped, or streaked like birds’ feathers, and no two are exactly alike.violetcrop-3(Photos taken with my iPod camera.  It really does a credible job, and the images stand up pretty well to a heavy crop.  Remember: if the shot is in focus and properly exposed, there’s a almost always a decent picture in there somewhere.  Just keep cropping until you find it.)
