Since so many of you have been kind enough to read (or at least view) the essay about inking from yesterday, I thought I’d start today’s post with a sample of the platoon system in action. Here’s page 4, with the brushwork done and the pen work in progress. Sometimes when you figure out an inking scheme for a particular object, it’s wise to ink all of them at once to set it in your mind. In this case, the object is Suki’s camera:If you haven’t guessed it by now, I am terribly jealous of Suki’s camera with its snappy compact rangefinder form factor, FF sensor, manual controls as represented by the one visible dial at the top (almost certainly a toggle controlling shutter speed surrounded by a nice knurled ring dial controlling ISO) and full view HD electronic viewfinder (under the hump over the lens mount), with a perfectly simulated match needle light meter. It has a magnesium body and almost certainly is covered with brown leatherette and I want it with a consuming passion.
Comics as wish fulfillment– some people have superheroic sex-and-power fantasies, other people have imaginary cameras. Now I need to do a design for the imaginary camera strap. I’m thinking chevrons. Anyway, I have about 6 pages about this amount of done, and I’ll be showing at least some of them to you, almost finished, through the rest of the day.
