tumblr sunday: whatever that elephant is doing, I want some.

Riyaz UdinFound this image on tumblr with the cryptic caption “Riyaz Udin”.  It’s definitely an Indian miniature painting, and Riyaz is a man’s first name I associate with Indian culture, so maybe that’s the artist’s name.  I wonder how old it is …  Hmm.  Not very.  He spells his name Riyaz Uddin; he’s from Jaipur and is trained in the classical tradition, the single hair brush and the whole bit, but he’s very much alive and on Facebook and everything.  How cool.

And I love this painting so much, from the spirals in the waves to the sun with a mustache to the realistic blue butterflies to the couple in the dual domed flying saucer.  And the central motif makes a lot more sense to me now that I know this is a contemporary work.
