At first I thought the butterfly was sitting on a horehound plant (mmm, horehound), but I think the flowers are wrong. Some kind of mint, perhaps?

Anyone who is interested in helping the Monarchs along can do so by planting milkweed and at least one kind of other flower. The caterpillars eat the milkweed and the adults drink the nectar from the other flowers. We have a project going on in my town encouraging people to plant milkweed and I see a lot of it around now. It makes for an interesting garden plant.

Messy in the fall, but definitely interesting. Around here the parks department is planting large areas of milkweed in many of the parks and it has definitely increased the monarch’s presence in the neighborhood.
