From the notebook, always in my pocket on winter car trips, a true haiku:
- December cornfield:
- Along the treeline, a pile
- Of plaid sofas.
Even writers/can’t make this stuff up.

The Midwest plaid sofa is normally reclusive in the wild, but can be driven into contact with humans by habitat disruption. I think you encountered one of their wintering grounds, where they tend to huddle in groups for warmth, browsing for loose change and crumbs.
It could also be a loss of habitat, forcing them into unusual migration patterns.
I’m pretty sure they were there because they were full of fleas and bedbugs or just too crummy for the Salvation Army and somebody was planning to throw some gasoline on them and burn them in a bonfire.
