Let’s get back to doing the Sunday internet image thing with a big image of a big guy: the Columbian Mammoth. This painting (?) by Carl Buell really gives you a feeling of what it would be like to walk among these long legged American mammoths, whose range extended from coast to coast, from the tundra and taiga south to to what is now Central America. Above all, these were the mammoths of the Great Plains. Once they have invaded your imagination you can’t see a herd of bison or pronghorn without putting a Columbian or two in the background. And they lived in Florida, in Texas, in Mexico …
The wooly, with its worldwide Northern range, elegant shape, sweeping tusks. and connection with prehistoric art, will always be the glamour mammoth, but Columbians are cool too.
